Organized and directed by Eugenio Alonso Campos, this year’s Vancouver Open took place at the Guru Angad Dev Elementary School in Surrey and attracted forty-two players. Despite the presence of three players rated over 2000 it was the number five and eight seeds, Joshua Doknjas and Primero Landingin, who came out on top with identical 5.0/6 scores. Close behind were the winners of the U2000 prizes, Paul Leblanc, Robin Yu, and Karl Cui, while the other class prizes went to Rinna Yu, Brian Sullivan, and Ethan Low (U1700), Paula Brewster and Neil Doknjas (U1400), and Daniel Du, Victor Zheng, and Jefferson Lee (U1200). Also notable were the number of players (nearly all underrated juniors) gaining more than 50 rating points, a consequence of the CFC’s new bonus point system: Robin Yu (91), Karl Cui (87), Jofrel Landingin (109), Paula Brewster (151), Neil Doknjas (137), Victor Zheng (212), Leo Qu (154), Tony Xun (107), and Daniel Du (74).
