3. Bishop Level

Time:  2 hours (Occurring once or twice per week); Cost: $25 per class; Total classes: 60-70

For students entering tournament play.  Upon completion, students should:

o   Possess their first extended opening repertoire – e4 for white and the defense against it for black.

o   Be comfortable attacking different King positions –King trapped in the center, King-side castled King, and Queen-side castled King.

o   Understand the main principles of defense and counterattack.

o   Be able to identify and utilize weak and strong squares.

o   Have an introductory understanding of additional Chess concepts – Blockade, Outpost, Rule of two weaknesses, Pawn storms, Overprotection, Prophylaxis, and Critical moments in the game.

o   Have familiarity with different pawn structures – Pawn chain, Backward pawn, Doubled pawns, Passed pawns, Connected pawns.

o   Understand the relative strengths and weaknesses of various piece combinations – Good vs Bad bishops, Bishop’s superiority over the knight, Knight’s superiority over the bishop, Opposite coloured bishops in the middle- and endgame, Rook’s superiority over two minor pieces, and Two minor pieces’ superiority over the Rook.

o   Understand various endings – Knight endings, Bishop endings, Queen endings, Essential Rook endings (Lucena’s position, Philidors position, etc.)
